The Kerosene Lantern Series: ⚔️🫎🌲The Hessian

THE HESSIAN — CHARACTER PROFILE
NAME
🫎 Günter Jäger
“The Hunter Warrior”
FIJIAN NAME
🌲 Guna
Over generations, the villagers of Fiji could no longer pronounce “Günter Jäger.”
His name slowly changed through whispers, stories, and oral tradition until only one name remained:
Guna.
A name now spoken quietly beneath the forests of Nakauvadra.

ORIGIN
Hessen-Kassel, Germany 🇩🇪
Born among the dark ancient forests of Europe where elk roamed beneath towering pines and winter storms swallowed entire villages in snow.
Before he became a mercenary, Günter’s family were woodsmen and hunters. His double-faced axe was originally a woodsman’s tool used to fell ancient ash and pine trees deep within the black forests of his homeland.
The handle remains:
- scarred from war,
- darkened by sweat, smoke and blood… not necessarily his.
The warriors later claimed:
“The axe smelled of cold rain and ancient timber even beneath the heat of Fiji.”
THE AMERICAN WARS
1776 — American Revolutionary War 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Günter Jäger became a Hessian mercenary hired by the British Crown during the American Revolutionary War.
Among soldiers, he became infamous for:
- brutal close combat,
- survival against impossible odds,
- and fighting with terrifying calm beneath musket fire.
He fought not for loyalty or king,
but because war had become the only world he understood.

THE YOTSEMIN INCIDENT
During a violent campaign near the wilderness later remembered in legend as “Yotsemin Yellow Stone,” Günter’s unit was ambushed.
He was:
- shot,
- wounded,
- and left behind among the dead.
Both flintlock pistols were heavily damaged during the fighting.
But Günter survived.
According to the legends, a Native American tribe discovered him barely alive and carried him into the forests where they nursed him back to health through winter.
The tribe studied the broken pistols and transformed them.
Knowing the pistols only carried a single shot before becoming useless in close combat, the warriors carved the wooden grips into reinforced shapes inspired by traditional war clubs.
After firing:
- the pistols became crushing melee weapons,
- capable of breaking bone at close range.
The carvings upon the handles resembled:
- antlers,
- roots,
- and hunting spirits of the forest.
Some say this was the beginning of the Elk Spirit mythology that would follow Günter across the world.

WEAPONRY
⚔️ Ancient Double-Faced Axe
A European woodsman’s axe turned weapon of war. Carried from Germany through America and eventually to Fiji.
🔥 Twin Flintlock Pistols
Modified after the Yotsemin ambush by Native American craftsmen. Their reinforced carved grips allowed them to function as war clubs after firing.
🌊 Sea-Worn Cutlass
A practical close-quarter blade acquired during his years crossing oceans and surviving among sailors, mercenaries and beachcombers.

ARRIVAL IN FIJI 🇫🇯
After disappearing from the battlefields of America, Günter drifted across the Pacific world aboard trading and military vessels until eventually reaching Fiji.
There, within the ancient forests of Nakauvadra, something changed.
The warriors of Fiji no longer saw merely a foreign mercenary.
They saw:
- a ghost of old wars,
- a hunter spirit,
- a man carrying forests within his soul.
And slowly…
the Hessian became Guna.

THE ELK WARRIOR
Villagers tell stories that during heavy mist:
- women gathering water,
- hunters beneath the trees,
- and children swimming near waterfalls…
sometimes glimpse a massive figure standing silently within the forest.
Roots rise behind his head like antlers.
Blue light glows faintly through the mist.
And the forest itself whispers warnings to wicked men:
“Go back.
Do not go forward.
For within the mist and darkness…
he will find you.”
